About this tour
Discover the best-preserved Norse ruins in Greenland and North America on this captivating journey through the fjords surrounding Qaqortoq. Just a half-hour boat ride from town, the Hvalsey Church Ruins, known in Greenlandic as Qaqortukulooq, offer a unique glimpse into Greenland's Norse past, set against dramatic mountains and calm fjords.
As we cruise through the deep blue waters, we pass Arpatsivik, also known by the Norse name Hvalsey or Whale Island. Along the way, your guide will share stories of the Norse settlers who lived in South Greenland for nearly 500 years during the Middle Ages.
At Qaqortukulooq you will experience the remarkably preserved stone church, one of the most iconic reminders of Norse life in Greenland. The site is connected to the last written record of the Norse, adding mystery and fascination to the experience. Why did the Norse disappear from Greenland? How did they live in this remote Arctic environment?
